Art Directly from The Artist!

With vivid colors and energetic brushwork, I present to the viewer a familiar world, but in the vibrant and always fresh way that I see it.  Inspired by the Tiffany stained glass windows in Cleveland, Ohio, I lay down thin glazes of pure color over the white canvas or over other pure colors. The process is time consuming and tedious, but the results are glowing and well worth the effort. I hope you enjoy it!

This twisted, wind worn red pine stands proudly atop a hard, pink streaked cliff of bedrock overlooking Teal Lake in Marquette County. A large dirt and pine needle filled cleft has rock 'n' rolled its way into the stone, and the tree has rooted deep in this fissure. Rather than allow itself to be twisted in the wind, the mighty sanguine evergreen bends gracefully, as if it has been dancing for a hundred years.  The evening sun sets the colors ablaze in both the tree and the stone; hues so bright and vibrant that you can almost hear them! The two dance their dance and sing their song together forever, or at least until death do they part.

Many people have compared this painting to "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth. I can certainly understand, although it wasn't a concsious decision on my part. The child was painted from a photo I took of my son, but the background -based on the wide open scenery in Southern Illinois- is invented.

You sit on a secluded beach, gazing out over the vast expanse of pthalo blue. A warm gentle breeze sends the tall beach grass into whispers. The waves gently roll and break on the sandy shore. In the distance, storm clouds roll by, but here all is peaceful and calm. You wish this moment could last forever. Well,  it can...

Wearing Away

Life can be busied, hectic and stressful. We all need to take a few moments to unwind. If you live near a large body of water like Lake Superior, you can attest to the calming and relaxing effect the breaking waves can have on our nerves. Sometimes the surf hits so hard, you can feel the crash in your chest! As you sit and listen to the rhythmic swooshing of the waves against the rocks, you notice how worn and rounded the stones are. Like you, they are worn from life's pounding, but instead of being broken they are re-shaped, and more beautiful. After several moments, you stand, refreshed, and return to your life with new vigor!

Hang "Wearing Away" in a quiet room in your home and let it wear away the rough edges of your burdens. Almost audibly, the waves rise and fall in flowing color. They crash against the break wall and disappear in the mist.

The glowing hues were created by painstakingly layering thin glazes of pure color. The light passes through a layer of blue, reflects off the layer of yellow underneath, and returns to your eye as a pulsing green. Just like looking into the clear water of Lake Superior...
